Outlander to close its Healdsburg menswear store

Outlander to close its Healdsburg menswear store

The owners of Outlander are looking to focus on their sister store One-O-One.

After being in business for 26 years, a men’s clothing store in downtown Healdsburg is closing Feb. 1.

Outlander, owned by husband-and-wife Bill and Christine Bryant, is closing so the couple can focus efforts on the sister store — woman’s clothing shop One-O-One, and spend time with family. The two shops are next to each other on Plaza Street.

“It’s time that we just cut back a little bit and focus on enjoying the house that we built while we were doing all of this and traveling, and we have two grandchildren now,” Christine Bryant said.

She and her husband opened Outlander on the Plaza in 1998 as a men’s clothing store, then opened One-O-One in 2002 with a focus on women’s European and Japanese-style clothing. Bryant said she was inspired to start the boutique after visiting a trade show in Paris while celebrating her 50th birthday.

Now 73, Bryant says the women’s store has “done very well. I’ve been very happy there, and it’s fun and easy for me to do One-O-One,” Bryant said.

Bryant said between the two stores, Outlander seemed like the more logical one to close because she is much more passionate about One-O-One than her husband, now 70, is about Outlander.

One-O-One’s manager Silvia Hiles said she has worked with Bryant for 26 years and agrees that letting Outlander go is the right thing to do. She said she encouraged it so Bryant would have more time to relax.

“Outlander was always a little bit of a chore as opposed to a joy,” Hiles said.

Although there are a number of women’s boutiques in Healdsburg, there are only two other stores that focus on men’s clothing — ereloom and Hardware.

Some stores sell a mix of men’s and women’s clothing such as Susan Graf Limited and Faherty — which generated debate about chain stores coming to downtown.

Bryant said not to worry because another men’s clothing store plans to move into the space.

“It feels good in many ways, but it’s been really hard in other ways,” Bryant said. “We are so grateful that we’ve been in business for 26 years thanks to our great customers.”

Faherty did not provide information on the new store’s name or when it will open.
